The widow of the late Chief MKO Abiola, Dr. Doyin Abiola, has died. The former Managing Director and Publisher of the now-defunct National Concord newspaper reportedly passed away in Lagos after a brief illness at 82.
Doyin Abiola was a trailblazer in Nigerian journalism and media management, famously becoming the first Nigerian woman to head a national newspaper. Her contributions to media and democracy were widely celebrated, especially during the turbulent June 12 era, when her husband, Chief MKO Abiola, was widely regarded as the winner of Nigeria’s annulled 1993 presidential election.
Abiola held a PhD in Communications and had served on various national boards and committees in both the media and education sectors. She is survived by her children and several grandchildren.
