Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, widely known as “The Sleeping Prince,” has died today at the age of 36, after spending over 19 years in a coma that followed a devastating car accident in 2005. His death marks the end of one of the most emotionally gripping and medically extraordinary stories in modern Saudi history.
The prince, a member of the prominent House of Al Saud, fell into a coma at just 18 years old while studying at a military college in London. He sustained severe head trauma in the crash, which doctors initially believed he would not survive. However, his family led by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal rfused to give up hope, choosing to keep him on life support and seeking both medical treatment and divine intervention over the years.
Throughout the nearly two-decade ordeal, Prince Al-Waleed remained at the family’s private medical facility in Riyadh, surrounded by devoted caregivers and loved ones. Occasional video updates released by the family showed what appeared to be slight movements or eye reactions, which many took as hopeful signs of consciousness. These rare moments garnered widespread attention, with millions offering prayers and words of encouragement across the Arab world and beyond.
In a heartfelt statement issued on satursay, Prince Khaled expressed profound grief but also gratitude for the years they were able to keep their son close.
“With hearts full of faith in Allah’s decree and destiny, and with profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn our beloved son Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away to Allah’s mercy today,” he wrote.
The Kingdom’s Royal Court is expected to issue an official condolence message in the coming hours. Already, tributes have begun pouring in from across the region. Prominent scholars, government officials, celebrities, and everyday Saudis have taken to social media to express their sorrow and solidarity with the grieving family.
Funeral prayers are expected to take place in Riyadh, though details are yet to be formally released.
