The revered Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 90. The monarch, who reigned for over six decades, reportedly died on Sunday at a hospital in Lagos after a brief illness.
Sources close to the royal family confirmed the passing of the highly respected traditional ruler, though an official statement from the palace is still being awaited as of the time of this report.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs and a highly influential figure in Yoruba land and beyond. Known for his deep intellect, progressive leadership, and bold advocacy for traditional institutions, the Awujale played a key role in bridging cultural heritage with modern governance.
His reign was marked by remarkable development in Ijebuland, with particular emphasis on education, cultural pride, and community advancement.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the royal family in the coming days.
