The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), yesterday, lamented that 26 of its personnel have been lost to Boko Haram insurgency.
Addressing newsmen, the Comptroller of the Service in Borno and Yobe states, Joshua Angbalaga, said that the insurgency in the North-east has seriously affected the activities of Customs.
He said that the situation has also adversely affected the revenue of the Command as only one of the 13 economic borders is functioning optimally with another running skeletal service.
Angbalaga said, “the boarder at Gaidam in Yobe State is functional while that of Gamboru, Borno is functioning skeletally.”
He stated that until the Nigerian military finally crushes the Boko Haram insurgency to free Borno State particularly, the 13 economic borders across Borno and Yobe states would remain closed.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian army recorded another major success in the fight against insurgency in the northern part of the country as its troops launched an attack against the Boko Haram terrorists.
A statement by the Deputy Director of Public Relations of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Col. Timothy Antigha, revealed that the success was in continuation of Operation Deep Punch 2, designed to smoke out Boko Haram terrorists inhabiting remote islands in Lake Chad basin lying within Nigerian territory.
He said troops of the division on Operation Lafiya Dole supported by soldiers of the Armed Forces Strike Group (AFSG) inflicted heavy casualty on the terrorists and recovered weapons and vehicles abandoned by the insurgents.
