The management of the university of ilorin has applauded members of the institution’s academic staff and students for their understanding and sacrifice in the face of the on-going strike by the non-teaching staff.
The commendation was made during a meeting the governing council chairman, dr. Abdullah jibril oyekan, and the vice-chancellor, prof. Sulyman age abdulkareem, held with officials of the institution’s academic staff union (asuu) recently.
Speaking at the meeting, oyekan noted with delight that academic activities are going on smoothly with the lecturers having to tidy up their work spaces themselves and perform other functions that are ordinarily beyond their duty calls.
This, according to the council chairman is a show of high level of sacrifice that could not go unnoticed.
On his part, the vice-chancellor, prof. Abdulkareem particularly commended the lecturers for their dutifulness despite the fact that their earned allowances are yet to be released.
He however, pledged that efforts are ongoing to ensure the release of the already approved allowance.
While asking for more cooperation from the academic staff, especially in view of the impending first semester examination, abdulkareem promised to make sure that all the lecturers that participate in the examinations are properly remunerated.
The vice-chancellor commended the unilorin asuu executive for showing good leadership and promised to always support them.
He also applauded the students for showing understanding in view of the extant situation on campus, while urging them to conduct themselves properly during the period of the examination.
…Inducts 84 graduands into medical profession
Rapturous delight filled the university of ilorin auditorium last wednesday as 84 medical graduands, got initiated into the medical profession as rightly exemplified and acknowledged by the laws and guidelines of the medical and dental council of nigeria.
The medical doctors, being the first batch of their highly deserving set, magna victores [class of 2017], became the 34th set to be inducted and admitted into the profession since the inception of the university faculty in 1978.
The guest speaker, prof. Akinyinnka olusegun, an erudite physician in paediatrics and child health at the university of ibadan, gave the ceremonial speech titled: “contemporary healthcare, medical education and global competitiveness: nigerian medical graduates as pilots on the runways of their professional lives”.
Highlighting the numerous problems affecting medical education in nigeria, the don admonished the graduands to always ensure that they are in good standing so as to diminish the scourge of curricular atrophy, lack of awareness of global change in medical education and brain drain in the national health workforce.
He stressed further that as new spawns, the baton of progressive change lies in their hands and like pilots taxiing across an asphalted runway, there is indeed a huge responsibility to stand up to, focus on, surmount and make landmarks of in the vicissitudes of professional life.
The vice chancellor of the university, prof. Sulaimon age abdulkareem, represented by the deputy vice-chancellor for research, technology and innovation; prof. G.a olatunji, having lauded and appraised the inductees, implored them to be just and efficient in duty in their chosen line of occupation because saving lives demands compassion and selflessness.
