All the 16 Commissioner-nominees sent to the Kwara State House of
Assembly by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq will be confirmed after
the screening of the last batch on Thursday (today).
The House received the names of the nominees in three correspondences
from the Governor which comprised of nine females including a serving
corps member then.
Their screening which commenced around 11:00am on Tuesday with six
nominees lasted over six hours as the lawmakers insisted they will not
adopt a ‘bow and go’ method.
The Speaker, Engr. Danladi Yakubu-Salihu disclosed the date for their
confirmation shortly after screening of the first batch during plenary
on Tuesday.
The six nominees that were screened by the House during Tuesday’s
plenary were Barr. Salman Jawondo from Asa Local Government Area,
Saeedat Modibo-Kawu, Ilorin South, Suleiman Rotimi Iliasu, Moro, Aliyu
Saifudeen, Kaiama, Harriet Afolabi, lfelodun and Dr Raji Rasaq from
Ekiti Local Government Area.
Additional six nominees who appeared before the House were further
screened on Wednesday (yesterday) ahead of their confirmation.
They include; Murtala Olarewaju (Oyun), Aremu Abosede Deborah
(Irepodun), Aisha Ahman-Patigi (Patigi); Florence Olasumbo Oyeyemi,
(Oke-Ero), Lafia Aliyu Sabi (Baruten) and Ahmad Fatimoh Bisola (Ilorin
West).
Except for Ilorin West and Baruten whose nominees were given the
privilege to ‘bow and go’ in honour of the Governor and Speaker, the
rest were subjected to questions related to areas of their discipline
by members and the Speaker.
The Speaker and the nominees from Baruten and Oke-Ero, Sabi and
Oyeyemi, respectively, however betrayed emotions during the exercise
when they wept in the course of the screening.
While the Speaker commended the magnanimity of Sabi and his
contributions to community development, most of the lawmakers said
there was no point drilling a man who not only conceded the party
ticket to a rival but also supported him during the election.
The Speaker further explained the role Sabi played in his own life as
a young man and his contributions to the victory of the All
Progressives Congress (APC). Both men sobbed as Danladi extolled the
qualities of Sabi, leading to minutes of silence in the chamber. Sabi,
49, is an administrator and former chairman of Baruten local
government.
All the nominees were accompanied to the House by their relations,
friends, well wishers and party supporters.
The last batch of the nominees would appear before the lawmakers on
today (Thursday).
